Undiscovered Zambia & Malawi (in support of African Parks)

Whether you have been to Africa before or this is your first time: this journey is for everyone who truly wants to discover something different and directly wants to support conservation on the continent. We’ve created this itinerary in support of African Parks, a non-profit conservation organization that takes on long-term management of protected areas in partnership with governments and local communities. Experience the most untouched areas of the safari mega hotspot Zambia as well as the completely unknown and underrated beauty of Malawi.
OVERVIEW

Your first destination is a raw diamond among the nature reserves in Zambia, Liuwa Plain National Park, home to endless plains and the second-largest wildebeest migration on the planet. Enjoy game drives not seeing another vehicle for miles and enjoy the comfort of your hand-picked property, which is only one of a handful in the entire park.

If you think Zambia is a hidden gem and not very touristy still, wait until you cross the border to neighboring Malawi. A country too often in the headlines for the wrong reasons, it is actually a place of serene natural beauty and recovering wildlife. Also on the shores of an immense lake (Lake Malombe) and the Shire River lies Liwonde National Park. This wildlife paradise in the south of Malawi surprises with an unmatched diversity. Expect to see elephants wading through vast swamps with mountains on the horizon, while lions stalk herds of antelope between thick bush, open plains and scattered palm trees. A big highlight is the recent reintroduction of Black Rhinos in the area, so keep an eye out for these beautiful beasts. Your last destination is Majete in the south of the country, where you can look forward to game drives along lush river banks and steep boulders with a plethora of wild action.

YOUR JOURNEY

Liuwa Plain

3 Nights

Liuwa Plain is the hidden gem amongst Zambia’s national parks. Here you won’t find tourist masses and a reserve that is strictly managed for conservation and non-profit purposes. Oh, and it’s also home to the second largest wildebeest migration in the world. This destination is also one of the oldest reserves in Africa and a perfect example of cohabitation between wildlife and the 12,500 people legally living in the park. Apart from the huge population of wildebeest, slowly but surely more species are reintroduced to Liuwa Plain such as lion, eland and buffalo. The park is managed by African Parks, one of the most successful conservation organisations in Africa.

Are you ready to discover another uncharted part of Africa? Cross the border to Malawi to explore Liwonde National Park in the south. This beautiful conservation area is located on the Shire River and Lake Malombe. This creates a stunning diversity in landscape from palm trees along river shores to swamps to savanna. Expect to see a plethora of bird life as well as iconic species such as elephants and the endangered Black Rhino. African Parks has successfully reintroduced several species like the rhinos to create a haven for Africa’s wildlife. Whether it’s a boat safari, bush walks or classic game drives in the grassland, get ready to spot game wherever you turn.

Majete Wildlife Reserve

3 Nights

Venture even further south to Majete Wildlife Reserve. Although it was already established as a conservation area in 1955, political unrest and poaching took its toll on the animal populations. African Parks took over management of the reserve in 2003 and it has been a success story ever since. Now Majete can proudly claim to be a Big Five area again and you can look forward to spotting elephants, rhinos, buffalo, leopards, lions and much more.  The beautiful landscape is characterized by hills, thick bush, open plains and swamps. Just like Liwonde, Majete also partly located on the Shire River, offering a diverse landscape and stunning wildlife scenes.
